TV For dogs!

Study Suggests Canines Prefer Dog Related Segments Over Human TV Programs

BOSTON, Massachusetts—Preliminary research by noted veterinary behaviorist Nicholas Dodman, DVM, and his team indicates that dogs left home alone prefer canine-oriented TV over other human programming. The study is the first of its kind to investigate the type of TV programming dogs prefer.

Dogs suffer from separation anxiety, even depression, when home alone, notes Dodman. To address this angst, 61% of dog owners in the US heed the recommendation from the Humane Society of the United States to keep a radio or television on in the house, to give their dog the opportunity to have visual and auditory stimulation. Now, recent findings demonstrate that dogs not only enjoy TV, but have a preference for content created specifically for canines.
The study exposed dogs to several controlled scenarios: human TV channels such as CNN and Animal Planet, DOGTV, or no television. Web cameras monitored the dogs’ behavior in their own homes and captured viewing time and preferences. The results concluded that 89% of dogs showed a preference for DOGTV over no TV; an average of 75% of dog viewers watched at least one segment of DOGTV longer than human TV channels. "The dogs clearly showed an interest in watching a television channel for dogs,” Dodman stated.
Does this mean dogs are expected to become couch potatoes?
Results revealed that a dog’s average viewing time is limited to about 12% to 13% of the time spent home alone.
"This is a ground-breaking first step toward addressing the issue of canine separation anxiety," said Dodman. "Although preliminary, this study suggests the benefits of background TV and dogs' unique preferences. Ongoing research will continue to measure the effects of DOGTV for dogs' physical and behavioral well-being.”
DOGTV launched in the test market of San Diego in February as an on-demand channel. Due to its success, the television channel for dogs is expected to debut in major U.S. cities this fall. For more information, visit www.dogtv.com.

Fostering Austin

Austin is a 10 year old Pomeranian. He has been at The Sydney Dogs & Cats home for about a month. He was abandoned by his owners & has a bad heart condition & needs medication every day for the rest of his life. I brought Austin home with me last week & I am fostering him until he finds a new home. I have how ever fallen in love with him & I am trying to think how I can adopt him my self. I think that he would make the perfect Happy Pets mascot!

Poppet found a new home

Poppet was a young Rabbit who came into Naomi's work, were she was working as a vet in an over crowded animal rescue. Because there were already to many rabbits there looking for a home, Naomi was faced with the awful task of euthanising this beautiful bunny. Luckily she called me & asked if I would like to adopt her. I didn't hesitate & brought Poppet home straight away. Since then I have cared for her & yesterday successfully found her a forever home with a beautiful young lady who couldn't wait to get her home & into her rabbit wonderland she had set up for poppet, complete with tunnels to run in & a sun room for her to lounge in.

Group Dog Walk 25/1

Who was on our walk: Inca Bailey Fudge & Hoover
Were we went: Sydney Park
General comments: It was a humid day. They dogs all enjoyed playing together. I worked with them all on their recall. Inca is an old natural & so is Bailey, they both however prefer a good smell of something interesting then a treat. By the end of the walk Fudge was responding really well & stayed very close to me & the other dogs the whole walk. Hoover loved his treats, he also took quite a liking to little Inca :)

Volunteering at The Sydney Dogs & Cats Home

Andrew & I are volunteering at the Sydney dogs & cats home. This is something we are doing every week to help the animals who are having a bit of a ruff trot. We help them out with cleaning walking & cuddling. This has been very rewarding.
We are also participating in there Open Paws Program. This is a great program. It works by training the staff at animal shelters. To help dogs that come in with behavioural problems & poor manners. It aims to improve there time at the shelter, while also making them more adoptable & better able to fit back into a home environment. To see more on this program click HERE There is also some great information on their sit for all pet owners. To see more on the Sydney Dogs & Cats Home & the cute animals there, click HERE

Daisy walk

Daisy & I took it slow today in the heat. We went for a little walk around the block & then daisy wanted a little rest in the shade, on her favourite patch of grass :)

Ruby & Wallys Walk

Ruby & Wally went straight to the cool shade in the back yard after our walk. It was a hot day & to tired pooches after a big walk. Rosey wasn't very interested in her lunch. I think she just wanted to rest
